The illegal shacks demolition drive near turtle nesting site at Morjim beach took an unusual turn.

The tourism department officer who had come to Morjim beach in order to demolish illegal shacks turned back after former Mandrem MLA and now GTDC chairman Dayanand Sopte paid Morjim beach a 'coincidental visit..'

When asked about the purpose of visit, both Sopte and the tourism officer were silent and waked away.

Shack owners Goa 365 spoke to say they have been paying license fees to the government.

But because of the shacks which they allege are illegal, their business have been affected.

The government should either make an effort to balance the customers in all the shacks or demolish both illegal as well as legal shacks says a local shack owner.

But possibly noting is happening because of political patronage, sources indicate.

However locals also say that it is not fair to demolish shacks which is the only income of most of the residents of Morjim as an act of preserving turtle nesting site.
