Kerelaremains the epicenter of India’s ongoing battle with Covid-19, accounting for over half of the country’s new infections in the past 24 hours. According to the Union Health Ministry, the state reported 300 of the 594 new cases recorded nationwide, along with 3 deaths.

With the emergence of the JN.1 sub-variant, which has caused global surge in corona virus cases, India has so far identified 21 cases of this new strain with Goa accounting for 19 of them. However, state epidemiologist Dr. Prashant Suryavanshi stated that the cases were detected through genome sequencing and patients showed mild symptoms of cough and cold and were not hospitalized. He further added that all the patients recovered following a 7-day home isolation.

As the country grapples with the ongoing pandemic, the total number of covid-19 cases in India has now reached a staggering 4.50 crores, with a total of 5,33,327 deaths since the outbreak began 3 years ago. Kerela has been hit the hardest, with 72,059 fatalities reported in the state alone. Despite a recent spike in covid-19 cases in Kerela, the state’s Health Minister Veena George has sought to allay fears, highlighting the preparedness of the state healthcare system to handle the surge.

However, with similar trends being observed in other states like Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Karnataka, authorities are on a high alert, urging citizens to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah chaired the State Technical Committee meeting on Covid19 on Thursday. The CM urged citizens above 60 years to wear masks in public while asking people not to panic.
