Exactly three years after he was found dead, social activist Fr Bismarque Dias was laid to rest on Tuesday in his St Estevam village.

Thousands of friends and well wishers attended the funeral, besides his family members.

They had not taken possession of his body, claiming that Fr Bismarque was murdered while police said he died due to drowning.

But till the last, murder could not be established.

Goa was shocked to hear about the accidental death of young social activist Fr Bismarque when he went missing on 5th November 2015 while his partially decomposed body was found in the tributary of Mandovi river in his St Estevam village.

Two young friends accompanied him had told police that he had gone for swimming post-midnight on 5th November after drinking beer to prove that the area is not haunted by ghosts.

The post-mortem report including the viscera report had stated that he died due to drowning.

But social activists as well as Fr Bismarque’s family members had refused to accept that it was an accidental death. People all over Goa came on the road, alleging that Fr Bismarque was murdered.

Accordingly multiple post-mortems were held of Fr Bismarque while also conducting all other scientific tests including the viscera report.

Fr Bismarque was on the forefront of several social movements including the agitation against the Golf Court in Pedne as well as the church property sold on Vanxim island.

But no evidence was found to establish the murder. Later, the Goa Human Rights Commission had ordered to lay his body to rest as it had not remained for any further autopsy. At his funeral, some of his friends and social activists spoke to Goa365.
