In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court has declined to legally recognize same-sex marriage in India. A constitutional bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud pronounced the judgement on 21 pleas files by same-sex couples and LGBTQ+ activists.

While reading out the judgement on same-sex marriage, the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud said “Homosexuality or queerness is not an urban concept or restricted to the upper classes of society”.

“There is a degree of agreement and there is degree of disagreement in the judgements”. The judgement is said to be a big blow to the LGBTQ+ community in the world’s most populous nation. The Supreme Court has also opposed adoption rights to unmarried and queer couples by a 3:2 majority on Tuesday.
