What is the alternate economy Goa needs to develop in the mining belt? Develop Goa’s five remote talukas as Belgaum for Goa.

Also agriculture and tourism should go hand in hand. Because even  if mining restarts, it won’t be with the same old pace.

The issue of alternate economy in the mining belt was discussed at the Rannmalem held on Goa365. Actual people who have thought over it and have also implemented it through action were brought together for this debate.

The agriculturist, wild life tourism entrepreneur and an economist. Vishwambhar Gauns from Navelim-Amone, Pankaj Laad from Tambdi Surla and economist Datta Damodar Naik. Vishwambhar is a former mining worker. 40 people from the village have come together and started growing cash crops in their fields.

Pankaj Laad joined a mining company as a geologist but then left it to start wild life tourism as a business. He runs it today successfully in Tambdi Surla.

He feels that the mineral fund should be utilised to develop the alternate economy.

Datta Damodar Naik was the member of Task Force set up by Goa government under architect Charles Correa.

Their suggestion was to develop five talukas – Canacona, Sanguem, Dharbandoda, Bicholim and Sattari.
