Torrential rains have caused widespread damage in Indonesia's West Sumatra province, with flash floods and landslides leading to the evacuation of over 70,000 people. The disaster has resulted in at least 19 fatalities and left seven individuals missing, according to local authorities

The affected areas, including the provincial capital of Padang and eight other regions, have seen significant damage to homes, bridges, schools, and farmland, with nearly 700 homes and 113 hectares of farmland impacted. Rescue teams are currently searching for those still missing, with 150 personnel involved in the effort. However, their progress has been hampered by blocked roads and challenging conditions.

While some of those evacuated have returned home as floodwaters recede, many are still gathered in local mosques, with no temporary shelters set up. Food, water, and medicines have been provided to those affected.

With further rain expected in the coming days, there are fears that additional floods and landslides could cause further damage. The disaster comes amid Indonesia's rainy season, which began in January and is expected to peak in the first quarter of the year, particularly on the islands of Java and Sumatra.
