An illegally run coal mine collapsed close to Dhanbad in Jharkhand, killing at least three people and leaving many others feared trapped. The tragedy happened this morning at Bharat Coking Coal Limited's Bhowra Colliery Area. The mine had been deemed shut down. Here’s the full story.

Local residents reached the spot and began pulling out people from the debris. Five people were rushed to nearby hospitals. Three people - a child, a woman and a 25-year-old man - were declared dead.

An inspector from the Jorapokhar police station, who was present at the spot, said they had received information that several people were stuck under the debris after a portion of a coal mine had caved in.

According to a local citizen, illegal mining happens here every day. A similar tragedy had previously occurred nearby. No one had died, although there had been some injuries. Numerous complaints have been filed but to no avail.
