‘Goan’ beach cleaners cry against retrenchments

It is always said that Goans are not interested in doing odd jobs.

It's wrong! Here are some Goans who are working tirelessly to keep our beaches clean.

But they have been rewarded with retrenchments.

Around 67 Goan beach cleaning workers marched to Tourism Department on Wednesday complaining that Drishti, a beach cleaning contractor, has sacked Goan workers and hired outsiders with double payment.

The Goan beach cleaners were accompanied by NCP vice-president Rajan Satelkar and NGO Hope Foundation's leader Andrea Pereira to press for their demands.

The workers said Drishti had appointed them on contract basis on salary of 300 rupees per day.

Suddenly Drishti sacked them and hired outsiders, paying them 600 rupees per day.

They also allege that they were not paid two months’ salary.

Unfortunately, the previous day GTDC director Menino D'souza was transferred as Registrar of Co-operative Societies.

Satelkar than called newly appointed director Sanjiv Gadkar and sought his appointment.

They also want to meet the Tourism Minister.
