The cloud of food scarcity could possible hit India even as it is still reeling under the corona virus pandemic. The reason is a locust swarm.

The locusts are threatening states like UP, Rajasthan and Madya Pradesh and even parts of Maharashtra.

The Administration is literally pulling its hair out to find ways to deal with this second body blow to the country. As of now Rajasthan has been most affected by these locusts.

Don't underestimate this tiny pests. The moment when locusts are hatched they smell sprouts and attack them. They develop into adults in matter of four weeks.

A adult locust eats vegetation equal to its body weight every day. A whole swarm can eat 100 tonnes of vegetation per day.

Locusts move on after devouring the entire vegetation and also send signal to other locusts about the availability of vegetation. These groups of locusts merge and form into the swarm.

The locust swarm entered India from eastern Pakistan on Tuesday.

The swarm first attacked Jaipur in Rajasthan. Later, they attacked crops in Gujarat and moved to Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh and then to Madhya Pradesh.

Now, the five villages of eastern Maharashtra have come under attack from the locusts.

Agriculture department personnel in Maharashtra have initiated chemical spraying on crops and vegetation to save them from these pests.

There is an alert for national capital Delhi.
