Govt urged to commemorate Francis Luis Gomes throughout the year

Francis Luis Gomes was India’s first freedom fighter, who represented Goans in Portuguese Parliament in Lisbon and fought for Goa’ freedom. He was called the Prince of Intellectuals in Europe. History professor Prajal Sakharadande has said this history should be made known to today’s generation.



30th September was the 150th death anniversary of Francis Luis Gomes.


Born in Navelim in Salcete, he was a freedom fighter, a writer, historian and also a linguist.


The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee paid tributes to him at the Congress House in the presence of Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat, GPCC President Girish Chodankar and other office bearers.


History researcher Prajal Sakhardande was invited to speak on the life of Francis Luis Gomes.

His anniversary was also observed in Madgao on Monday.


In fact ardent political rivals like Digambar Kamat and Girish Chodankar shared the dais with Goa Forward leader Vijai Sardesai.


All of them agreed that Francis Luis Gomes has been neglected by the governments till date.
