Forest Department dismisses appeal against Cutting of trees at Mopa

The Forest department dismissed the appeal by an NGO against what they termed as excessive and illegal cutting of trees at the site of the Mopa airport on Monday.



Rainbow warriors, an NGO filed an appeal that was heard and the appeal dismissed on the grounds that the case was already being heard by the National Green Tribunal. 

The NGO alleged that the Forest Department has given permission to chop down 21,703 trees at the site but more were being cut.

On Saturday activists went to the site and alleged the Forest Department is supposed to cut down trees after checking and marking trees.

But in here no such system is being followed here.

They alleged that they went to the site where the trees were being cut and they found bulldozers uprooting trees randomly.

Activists say that there are over a lakh tree at the site.

Meanwhile, some Perne farmers along with some activists held a protest at Azad Maidan in Panaji on Saturday against the felling of trees at Mopa.

Locals also held a dharna at Azad Maidan Panaji.
