The recent announcement of a hike in fees for ferry services in the state has spiked strong opposition, from locals and political parties alike. Given that many villages, such as Chorao, Divar, and St. Estevan rely solely on ferries, the hike has put a question on the government’s intentions

The blue and white ferries are an icon unique to the state. They are a vital mode of transport for many, given the number of island villages, and for years, their services were free before a Rs10 charge was levied on 4-wheelers.

Now, the River Navigation Department has announced a fresh set of hikes, in which 2-wheelers will also be charged for using the service. 2-wheelers will be charged a fee of Rs 5, while 4-wheelers will have to pay Rs 40 –which is four times the original rate. The new fees will be in effect within another 15 days, according to Minister Subhash Phal Dessai. This has not gone down well with the islanders and opposition.

River Navigation Minister, Subhash Phal Desai has justifiedthe fee hike as a means to generate revenue to introduce faster ‘RORO’ ferries, capable of taking 3 times the load whilst upgrading the ferry infrastructure in the next 6 months. In light of the resistance, the department said that it would reconsider the fee hike.
