Retired seafarers are on a hunger strike after ex-gratia pension scheme was stopped. They demand an increase of Rs 5,000 or a onetime settlement of Rs 5 lakh and above.

Congress has lent a support promising to raise this issue in the upcoming assembly session.

Earlier this year, announcements were made to stop the Monthly Ex-gratia Monitory Assistance MEMA scheme by which retired seafarers were given a monthly pension of Rs 200 and their widows were given Rs 400 per month and instead given a onetime settlement of Rs 12,500.

To oppose this, retired seafarers went on a hunger strike at the Lohiya Maidan in Margao to oppose this new implementation.
