Would get a chance to get into international literature if I had studied French, Jnanpith Award winner Damodar Mauzo told Goa 365,

expressing an unusual grievance. Mauzo said that this suggestion was given by his Marathi teacher when he started schooling. But I did not take the suggestion and this is haunting me now.  Here’s more.

Damodar alias Bhai Mauzo was born on 1 August 1944. The 77-year-old noted littérateur stays in Majorda. His house is literally a mine of knowledge. Instead of showpiece items, books welcome to the guests. Bhai speak sweetly, but if necessary he can talk to the point. The Jnanpith Award, which is considered the highest literary award, was bestowed on him as 75th award this month, acknowledging his achievements and accomplishments.

Mauzo was awarded the Sahitya Academy Award for his novel ‘’Carmelin” in 1983. He has many other prestigious awards to his name also. But It is not just this , but Bhai’s language, social response and affection to society that makes him great.

Literature written Bhai has also translated into French, English, Portuguese. He written about an era. But he tells future writers to adapt change according to time.

Bhai says he is not into giving advice to new generation even he continues to climb up towards glory. He has only message to youth - reading, observation and research is key in understanding the literature.
