Xapora fishermen conducts coconut pooja to start fishing season

Xapora fishermen on Monday performed the traditional naryal pooja and released the coconut in the sea to mark the start of the fishing season. However, they have a number of complaints that the fishing jetty is neglected and in absence of a police guard some anti-social elements come there during night time and drink alcohol.

Xapora fishermen say that they cannot send their boats out in the sea for fishing because of the sand bar that forms near the jetty. They say their repeated representations to the Fisheries Department have fallen on deaf ears.

The chairman of Xapora Boat Owners Fishing Cooperative Society said there is a lot of trash left behind by people coming during the night to  drink alcohol. He said the jetty is in adilapidated condition and the  government pays no attention to their pleas.
