MIZORAM: At least 26 killed in railway bridge collapse

At least 26 workers were killed after an under-construction railway bridge collapsed in Mizoram. Many others have been reported missing. Video footage shared by Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga showed a metal frame that had toppled off towering columns into a wooded valley below.



The accident happened at Sairang, a town about 20km away from capital city, Aizwal.

State Transport Minister, T J Lalnuntluanga, informed that 18 bodies have been recovered while 8 others have been located and are being pulled out of the debris by rescuers. People living nearby rushed to the construction site to rescue injured workers and take them to hospital, police said.

The National Disaster Response Force is currently at the site conducting rescue ops. The Northeast Frontier Railway announced that a “high level enquiry committee” is set up to investigate. The government also informed that families of those who died in today’s accident would receive Rs 2 lakh
