Are Indian-Canadian ties fragile?

India and Canada have been dealing with several bi-lateral issues over the past few days. The foremost of which has been the Pro-Kalistani rebellion against Indians living in Canada. Another contentious issue has been the deportation of Indian students after forged college admission offer letters came to light.

India has hit out at Canada for allowing a float in a parade in Brampton that apparently ‘celebrated’ the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The six-second clip was shared on Twitter which said that the float was part of a 5 km-long parade in the Canadian city on June 4.

Diplomatic temperatures rose after the video showed a tableau in a Brampton parade with Gandhi wearing a blood-stained white saree and her hands up as turban-clad men pointed guns at her.

Meanwhile, Canada’s National Security Advisor has accused India of meddling in the country’s affairs, putting the world’s biggest democracy in the league of authoritative nations such as Russia, China and Iran.

"When I talk about foreign interference and economic security, I'm now talking about a number of state actors and non-state proxies. This includes Russia, Iran and India. That said, the actor that comes up most on these issues, and it's no surprise to anybody, is China,"

Scores of Indian students, primarily from Punjab, who entered Canada on study visas three to four years ago now face deportation after their college admission offer letters were discovered to be forged, according to media reports. The issue was brought to light when these students applied for permanent residency in Canada in March.
