Govt negligence in contracts ensures most CCTVs not working in the state

Plans for installing CCTVs on roads are being discussed since 2014. Many cameras have even been installed in many places all over the state.

But a vast majority are not working even after crores of public money has been spent. The reason?

At the time of installing them nobody bothered to sign a maintenance contract with the companies.

And so the cameras have fallen in a state of disrepair. Here is an example of Ponda city.

Goa has among the highest densities of 4 or 2 wheelers in the country.

Its accident rate is pretty high. But the government only seems to wake up whenever there is a major accident or incident.

Promises to install CCTVs have been made on numerous occasions. And they have been installed too.

When the Ponda Municipality chief officer was asked if any action would be taken on the company that had installed the Cameras, he said that they had told him that they were only supposed to install them.
