Cong demands judicial probe into lathicharge, publish review petition on mining

The Congress has demanded a judicial inquiry into the lathicharge at the agitation by mining dependents on Monday.

The opposition party has also charged that it was a government-sponsored strike.

They also want the BJP-led government to make the review petition public, which is being planned to be filed before the Supreme Court.

The Congress Legislature Party on Tuesday condemned the lathicharge the police resorted to at the agitation held near Mandovi bridge on Monday, where the protestors, as well as the innocent public, was beaten up.

However, in the same breath, the opposition party said the strike of the mining-dependent people was sponsored by the government.

Congress has asked why the government delayed by over a month the decision to file review petition on mining ban when the Supreme Court had scrapped the 88 mining leases last month.

The party leaders thus demand that the government should disclose the draft of review petition to the public.

On the other hand, the CLP has also appointed a five-member committee to study legalities of the whole issue.
