Monday was a day of major protest by sugarcane farmers. Hundreds of farmers protested in front of the Sanjivani sugar factory since morning and pressurised MLAs and MPs to act.

Finally they got an assurance to start the factory by 5th of December. The crushing season however is already delayed by almost a month.

Sugarcane farmers are in deep trouble because Sanjivani sugar factory keeps on postponing its date of beginning the crushing of cane.

Farmers brought labour from outside for harvesting as the factory said it would start crushing the cane from 20th November.

As it did not happen, the farmers on Monday gathered in front of the factory. Sanvordem MLA Dipak Pauskar, Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar and ex-MLA of Sanguem Subhash Phaldesai also came.

They warned to block the Ponda-Mollem national highway if no firm assurance comes from the government by 2 'o clock to start the crushing season from 30th November. MLA Pauskar  rushed to Panaji to meet the ministers.

Farmers were agitated since there was no response till 4 'o clock in the evening.

Finally, PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar spoke to them on phone and South Goa MP Narendra Savoikar also came from Panaji, after getting written assurance from Registrar of Cooperative Societies that crushing would start from 5th of December.

Congress MLA Alex Reginald Lourenco also reached there to support the farmers.

Farmers have now threatened to March to Panaji if the government does not keep its promise of 5th December.
