Here's good news on rabies front even though there are 1.4 lakh stray dogs in Goa.

Assistant Director of  Animal Husbandry,  Dr Vilas Naik on Wednesday said there have been nil rabies cases in 2018.

Mission Rabies, in collaboration with Goa Government,  has been conducting anti-rabies vacination drive over the past 3 years.

Dr Vilas said  the contract with Mission Rabies has been extended for another three years and will cover  sterilisation of stray dogs along with vaccination.

He also said india is planning to  eliminate rabies by 2030.

Director of  Education, Mission Rabies, Dr Murugan Appapillai, said the anti-rabies drive is three-pronged action, namely  mass dog vaccination, mass education and awareness and enhanced surveillance.

He said rabies is 100 per cent preventable: One has to avoid dog bite, and if there is a dog bite wash the wound thoroughly and go for vaccination immediately.
