Vasant Josalkar, Goa’s legendary theatre artist no more

Vasant Josalkar, known as a Bishmacharya of Goan Theatre and a nationally renowned artist, expired on Thursday. He was 72 years old. Eminent personalities in Goa’s theatre and film industry visited and paid him tributes. As per his last wish, his body was donated to GMC.



Josalkar was being treated at Galaxy hospital in Mapusa when he breathed his last.

As a student of National School of Drama, Delhi, Josalkar became a prominent figure with his extraordinary performances in dramas like 'Mukhyamantri' and 'Saiyan Bhaye Kotwal.'

His performances in 'Gateman’s Gift' in 'Malgudi Days,' national award winning 'Parinati' directed by Praksh Jha, Special Jury award winner of Pune International Film Festival, 'Nadi Vahate' in Marathi and international award winning Konkani film 'Poltodcho Munis' are still remembered.

He had started an era of Hindi theater in Goa by directing 'Andha Yug,' when he was the director of Theatré Art Faculty of Kala Academy.

He also created a professional theatre group of Kala Academy called Rangmell with his first production Gidhad Gatha.

He was awarded India’s most prestigious Sangeet Natak Academy at the hands of then President, Pranab Mukherjee.

Artists from Goan film and theatre industries paid him tributes at his original house in Varkhande, Pernem and also at the GMC hospital.
