Major tragedy was averted on Sunday night as one engine of Goa-Delhi Indigo flight caught fire soon after taking off. The pilot succeeded in making emergency landing. Environment Minister Nilesh Cabral and many other senior officials and scientists were aboard.

It was little after taking off, the passengers from behind suddenly started shouting that plane had caught fire.

Obviously all were panic. Realising that one engine had caught fire, the pilot immediately put off the engine and turned the flight back to Goa for emergency landing.

The 180 passengers were then flown to Delhi post-midnight by another flight. Our reporter Prahar Savoddekar spoke to Environment Minister Nilesh Cabral who was on the flight.

Dabolim Airport Director Gagan Malik told our reporter Hiru Mahale in Vasco that there is no need to panic in such situations because all flights have two engines and the aeroplane can run on one engine.

However, he expressed total ignorance over engine catching fire.
