Cyclone Nisarga wreaks havoc on Maharashtra coast, Goa spared

The cyclone Nisarga first made its landfall on the Maharastra coast at Alibaug on Wednesday. The cyclone turned into severe cyclone storm and wreaked havoc in Ratnagiri and Raigad district of Maharashtra.



The cyclone then moved towards Mumbai.


NDRF said more than 1 lakh people who were in the cyclone path evacuated.


Cyclone Nisarga made its landfall in Ratnagiri district after it turned into severe cyclonic storm during the wee hours of Wednesday.


People living along the coastal areas were evacuated. Entire district was shaken due to heavy rainfall followed by gusty winds.


Cyclone then move towards Raigad district. Around 12000 people were evacuated from the coastal areas.


390 people were lodge in nearby schools in Alibaug. NDRF, SDRF teams are on the site to carry out rescue operations.


Due to the high speed winds, many trees and electric poles fell down in Shrivardhan as well as in Alibaug

Cyclone will move towards Mumbai and the city has already witnessed heavy rainfall.


In Mumbai, vehicular movement has been restricted on Bandra-Worli Sea and flights have been cancelled between 2:30 pm to 7 pm.


Three people were injured after cement blocks fell on their shanty in a chawl from an adjacent under-construction building in suburban Santacruz.


At least 100,000 people, including some coronavirus patients are moved to safer locations. The first such storm to threaten Mumbai in more than 70 years.


Goa too was hit with heavy rains and gusty winds, even tough it was no in the direct path of the cyclone.
