Mhadei issue has suddenly taken a twist. The battle has gone back to the Mhadei Dispute Tribunal from Supreme Court.

The union WRD ministry has extended the term of tribunal to decide on references made by Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Centre.

It means the old award would not be notified. And also the Supreme Court hearing would be postponed till the new award is issued.

The Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal had issued its award on 14th August 2018. Same day, Maharashtra filed a reference before the tribunal.

Goa filed two – on 20th August and 20th September, Karnataka on 13th November and Centre on 14th January.

Accordingly, the tribunal had to submit its further report by August last year.

As this did not happen, all the three states as well as the Centre had challenged the award in the Supreme Court.

The hearing on it started on 20th February. Next hearing was fixed on 15th, 16th and 22nd July.

Meanwhile, WRD ministry issued a notification on 17th February, extending term of the tribunal with a condition to file the further report by 19th August.

Means in the next six months.

What happens now to the old award issued by the tribunal in 2018? Because Supreme Court had issued interim order to notify this award.

And what about the next hearing in the Supreme Court? Government sources said their focus would be now on arguing before the tribunal.

Mhadei Bachao Abhiyan Secretary Rajendra Kerkar said Supreme Court will have to postpone its hearing. But legal battle is the only alternative.
