Goan bakers say they will not take govts’ help despite inflation

Pao. The traditional Goan bread has been hiked to 5 rupees. The wholesale rate will be 4 rupees, the All Goa Association of Bakers.



The decision has been taken due the soaring inflation, they said. But despite this they won’t take a single penny worth  of assistance from the government, they resolved. 

The All Goa Association of Bakers on Saturday convened a meeting and fixed prices for the pao. A single pao would cost 5 rupees while in wholesale paos weighing 50 grams would cost 4 rupees.

Areas in Bardez, Ponda, Old Goa have already started selling pao at 5. Only decision in Salcette has not yet been taken, Peter Menezes said.   

Along with time, there is change in pao making and also the persons entering into this business. People from UP, Bihar, Karwar and other states have got involved in this business and sell pao at cheap rates, Menezes said explaining how it will affect their business.

 

Many businessmen demand government help. However, the bakers have flatly refused any help, he said. Listen to them.
