Solve sandbar problem urgently: Betul fishermen

21 Oct 2019 07:45 PM

The sandbar at the mouth of River Sal is creating a major hurdle for fishermen from Betul. They have urged the government to construct a retaining wall near the mouth of the River.

They also reiterate their demand to put a stop to fishing with LED lights, with a special emphasis on fishing by trawlers coming from neighbouring states.

Betul fishermen have been facing this sandbar problem for a long time now. During high tide they are able to take their boats out to sea but while returning back during low tide they face difficulties.

The Fisheries Department had started to build a 400-metre retaining wall at the mouth of the River Sal to regulate the flow of sand, but Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority had brought objection to the work.

The fishermen said that the government should put an end to the LED light fishing in the area. They alleged that even trawlers from neighbouring states were coming to fish in Goan waters.
