The Colva Fama was celebrated on Monday with pomp and gaiety at the church Church of Our Lady of Merces, Colva . Devotees from all over and across communities came to venerate the miraculous statue of the infant Jesus.

According to local legend, the statue of Menino Jesus was found off the coast of Mozambique in the 17th century by some shipwrecked sailors led by Fr Bento Ferreira, a Jesuit missionary. Fr Bento was posted at Colva in 1668 and he had a special altar built for the statue.

Every year, on the second Monday of October, the Colva church celebrates the Fama, which is basically a celebration of the infant Jesus.

Colva is the only place in Goa where the celebrations on the feast day are on a smaller scale when compared to the Fama.

Fama is the day meant to announce the start of the novenas that lead to the feast day and blessing of the symbolic 'maddi' that is erected.

Fame is a time for both devotions as well as celebration. The plastic figurines outside the churches are for the faithful who have problems.

The denote the various issues and are placed on the altars for blessing and solution of the problem. After the religiosity, are the festivities with the fair lining the road adjoining the church.
