Baba Amte had set up Anandvan in the deep forests of Chandrapur district of Maharashtra, primarily to rehabilitate people suffering with leprosy.

His son Dr Prakash Amte later set up Lok Biradari project in the forest of Hemalkasa in Gadchiroli district, where they live with all kind of wild animals. Today both these places have become pilgrimage centers for the environmentalists, nature lover, friends of animals and social activists.

Dr Sheetal Amte-Karajgi is a third generation and daughter of Vikas Amte. She looks after Anandvan.
