She was known as Goa’s Mammy. Goa’s firebrand social activist and politician, Victoria Fernandes, breathed her last on Saturday morning at the age of 85. She was four-time MLA, a minister and also the deputy speaker.

But Mammy was more known as the leader of the downtrodden. Her funeral will take place on Monday at 4 ‘o clock in the evening.

At young age, when she migrated from Curtorim to St Cruz after marriage, Victoria Mammy was active in Goa’s social movements.

She then joined Janata Party during Emergency and entered the political arena in 1977. But she had to wait till 1994 to enter Goa Assembly as an independent legislator and remained the MLA for four times till 2007 election, but as the Congress woman.

Meanwhile, she was also arrested under CONFEPOSA in 1990 and imprisoned at Aguada jail.

She served also as the minister twice and then the deputy speaker of Goa Assembly. First time she became the minister in December 1988 for only three months under Luizinho Faleiro.

Then on 24th November 1999 when Francisco Sardinha split from the Congress to become the CM with BJP’s support. She held portfolios like Agriculture, Fisheries, Tourism and Women & Child Development. She also held the post of deputy speaker in 2005 when Pratapsing Rane was the chief minister.

Victoria Mammy’s role in the Opinion Poll was commendable. Dressed as a Maharashtrian women, she had gone alone to Pedne in an open jeep and had tried to convince the Maharashtrawade Pednekars to oppose Goa’s merger in Maharashtra. Adv Uday Bhembre, one of the leaders of Opinion Poll in 1966-67, paid his tributes to this iron lady.

Mammy was equally popular among all the political parties. Her opposition was on the grounds of principles and not personal. And she entertained all the past and present legislators on the legislators day by performing small skits along with Shambhubhau Bandekar and Nirmala Sawant.

She was also on the forefront of several agitations of downtrodden communities since then, including Render means toddy tappers, Ramponkar means traditional fishermen, Shetkar means farmers and Meethkar, who produced salt.

And one intellectual from her St Cruz always remained strongly behind him. Scientist Dr Nandkumar Kamat. He literally broke down while paying homage to Victoria Mammy.
