Goa’s union minister Shripad Naik feels that Goa Forward need not put condition of finding solution to mining crisis to remain in the coalition.

According to him, they already know that solution would be found and mining would definitely start by next season after monsoon.

He claims that Centre is already convinced about the issue.

Shripad Naik says the first option would be approaching Supreme Court with a review petition.

If they don’t succeed, then centre would try and issue an ordinance. But the only option is to amend the MMDR Act.

The mining concessions issued by the Portuguese government in 1950 were converted into 50-year leases in 1987 and they expired in 2010 as per the MMDR Act.

The move now is to amend the act and make it 50 years of leases from 1987, and not 1950. Then the leases could continue till 2037.

The Supreme Court has scrapped these leases in its latest order of 7th February and asked to auction the mines, as per the new provision of the MMDR Act.

The issue of resolving mining crisis has suddenly become a political issue. Goa Forward has made it a pre-condition.

If not resolved, it has threatened to withdraw from the coalition government and also not support the BJP in the forthcoming Lok Sabha poll.
