Madkaikar new Panaji Mayor, Pascola Deputy, elected unopposed

No need to wait for a formal announcement.

New Mayor of Panaji is Uday Madkaikar. And Pascola Mascarenhas is the deputy Mayor. Both are elected unopposed. Because BJP decided not to field their candidates. Perhaps on the eve of elections, there is a secret understanding between Babush Monseratte and the BJP. A decision to replace the Mayor and deputy Mayor was taken at a meeting over dinner hosted by Babush on Tuesday night. Accordingly, on Wednesday morning, Uday Madkaikar and Pascola Mascarenhes filed their nominations. But there were no more nominations till evening. The formal announcement however would be made on Thursday morning. Watch new Mayor Uday Madkaikar explains his plans for Panaji city. While Madkaikar was filing his nomination, BJP had a press conference to announce that they will not contest because they are in minority. In a 30-member Corporation of City of Panaji, Babush panel has 15 corporators while BJP has only 12. Surendra Furtado, his wife Ruth and Rupesh Halarnkar are independents. BJP was in minority even earlier. But they had contested. But this time they did not. Is it because they are in minority or it is a secret understanding between Babush and BJP on the eve of elections?
