Contract farming bill opposed in Goa

21 Sep 2020 03:23 PM

Various organisations on Monday opposed the contract farming bill passed by the Parliament recently. They expressed fears that the new law will do away with the minimum support price to farmers and that the legislation will help corporates usurp framers' lands.

These organisations have given a call to farmers to gather at Azad Maidan on Tuesday to oppose the bill. They said the government claims that it brings in new legislations in people's interest. But questioned why the government is not acting on the Swaminathan report. The Parliament passed three bills recently, namely the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill.
