MMC opposes enhanced powers to MPT

25 Jun 2018 08:38 PM

The Mormugao Municipal Council has objected to the conversion of the MPT to a Major Ports authority saying that this would be detrimental to the state.

It says, if this happens then MPT will autonomously get powers to develop projects unhindered or unsupervised without taking permissions from any local body.

The Director of Municipal Administration had sent the letter to MMC seeking opinion on the impact of major port authorities bill 2016 on the state.

MPT owns about 16.30 lakh sq mts land in addition to another about 6.50 sq meter land of the reclaimed area within municipal limits.

Therefore the entire foreshore area abutting the municipal area comes under the port limits.

Meanwhile, the MMC has passed the resolution on the resumption of mining activities in Goa after a letter was received from the Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida and  Goa Mining People Front seeking support.
