Tourism department wasting money on garbage tenders, foreign trips

Deputy Speaker Michael Lobo on Monday demanded that garbage collection from beaches and its disposal be handled by Goa Waste Management Corporation.

He said that there was no need to float a tender or appoint a garbage collection agency spending crores of rupees, when the corporation has a capacity of treating 120 tons of garbage per day.

He also said that the foreign tourists were decreasing, but huge money was being wasted on foreign trips.

Michael said Tourism Department had floated two contracts worth 14.5 Rs crores per annum for beach cleaning.

The tender was cancelled by the erstwhile Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar after allegations of controversial inflated budgets and estimates.

The matter is sub Judice and with Goa Lokayukta, he said.

Lobo said that now there is only single bidder for the new tender. He said that the  tender had been floated with a minimum estimate of 12.5 Rs. crores per annum which is 35% higher than the State is presently paying for the same service.

Lobo also lashed out on former tourism minister Dilip Parulekar for failing to bring in foreign tourists.

Lobo claimed that former tourism minister wasted tax payer’s money in a bid to increase the numbers of foreign tourists.

Sources say that the Goa pavilions abroad are very shoddy when compared to to other states.

And this along with the pathetic state of the infrastructure and type of tourists coming to the state are the prime reasons why foreign tourists and high-end Indian tourists are becoming less.
