Madgao municipality’s twelve and a half lakhs have gone down the drain. After five days, it wound up its chemical spraying operation as the exercise failed to douse the scary fire of garbage dump.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has now found a new solution after holding high level meeting.

Douse the fire with mud and water. But we have to wait for four more days to see the result. Till then, the toxic smoke may keep spreading in the whole locality.

In five days, Madgao municipality spent twelve and half lakh rupees for 1408 litres of chemicals. It has already procured 2820 litres. Each can of 35 litres costs 885 rupees.

But it wound up its operations after seeking advise of local fire officials as well as Director General of Mumbai Fire Services Dr Prabhat Rahandale.

On Friday morning, Minister Dr Pramod Sawant drove down straight to Sonsodo and inspected the burning site.

He ordered health officials to camp in the locality and then had a high-powered coordination committee meeting at his bungalow in the evening.

It was attended by local MLAs as well as officials. They have now found a new solution, to use mud and water to douse the fire.

Madgao MLA Digambar Kamat, Curtorim MLA Alex Reginald Lourenco were very combative.

He said that if there is no solution then they would stop unsegregated garbage being dumped at Sonsoddo.

Former chairperson of Margao Municipal Council says the chemical being used to douse the fire is actually meant to treat garbage and not to put off fire.
