Molestation of a devotee inside the temple. It has allegedly happened. That too in the famous Mangeshi temple. By one Pujari. The incident occurred last month. But Ponda police have filed FIR on Thursday, based on a email complaint of the girl victim. Following this, the temple committee has suspended the Pujari. But with reservations.

The Ponda police have started an investigation after filing the First Information Report based on the victim girl’s complaint.

On Friday, a team of police headed by Police inspector Harish Madkaikar visited the temple premises to begin the probe on the matter. They have reportedly also taken possession of the CCTV footage.

The incident first in the public domain on June 20th, when complainant from Mumbai, who is studying in the USA, described the ordeal she reportedly went through on that fateful day.

According to her, the incident took place on June 14th when she visited the temple along with her parents.

Victim describes the ordeal

“As my mother & I started walking towards gabhara (inner sanctum) , he stopped us”

“He said don’t go together & asked my mother to go first”

“As soon as my mother went into gabhara, he started a conversation with me”

“I touched his feet, before I could stand straight up, he grabbed me by my shoulders and pulled me towards him”

“And before I could even understand he kissed me on my cheeks”

After the victim narrated the incident to her family, the matter was taken up with the committee instead of the police.

In its response to the victims’ complaint, the Committee had said it “could not lay its hand on any dependable evidence to establish a prima facie case” and urged them to take up their respective grievances with an “appropriate authority”.

Upon this response, the complainant then took the social media to seek justice. Minister Govind Gaude may not have found out why the police complaint was delayed by a month.

But the press note released by Mangeshi Devasthan Committee Chairman Chandranath Dhume explains it all when he narrates the whole chronology.
