The corridor is 15 nautical miles from the coastline and 20 nautical miles wide.
National Fishworkers Forum President Narendra R Patil said that the proposed plan for the shipping corridor is to facilitate the plans for the proposed Sagamala project in which port modernization, new port development, port connectivity enhancement, port-linked industrialization are planned by the Ministry of Shipping Nitin Gadkari.
General Secretary T Peter said that the Director General of Shipping is in the process of notifying a designated corridor for merchant ships purportedly to avoid ships and fishing boats collision in mid sea.
Peter alleged that the current move by the DGS was unilateral and meant to protect the interests of commercial shipping companies by sidelining the livelihood interests of fishermen in India.
