Farmers upset over govt action on sugarcane factory

Sugarcane farmers have told the government to come clean on whether their sugarcane would be harvested within a month. Sugarcane farmers held a protest at the gates of Sajivanee sugar factory in Dharbandora on Wednesday on the issue. Answer our questions or we won't leave the gates, farmers threatened.

Farmers said rates of fertilizers, workers payment and other things have skyrocketed so they need a good price for sugarcane.

They also demanded that government should harvest their sugarcane and export it. And not to give baseless assurances to set up new factory.

When 1200 metric tonnes capacity of plant cannot function properly how the government would manage 2500 metric tonnes of new plant.

Government shouldn't blame farmers if they do not harvest sugarcane with that capacity as they do not have land to produce sugarcane at such quantity, a farmer charged.

The Minister reacted to the protest and the charges
