Girls pushed into prostitution in Goa are not only from outside the state, almost 12 per cent Goan girls are involved in the organised sex racket. And it has not remained limited to coastal belt alone. It has also spread in the interiors of Goa.

Besides 24 states of India, sex workers from five countries are also brought to Goa. These are some shocking figures a survey has revealed.

Anyay Rahit Zindagi is known as ARZ. It has been working in Vasco, for the rehabilitation of sex workers, since 1998.

These rehabilitated girls and women are today running a mechanised Swift Wash Laundry.

On the other hand, these are the shocking result of the data ARZ recently compiled.

India has total 29 states. Out of these, women from 24 states are brought to Goa.

These are the official figures of girls rescued by the police, not of the girls involved in it.

Even among the number of rescued girls, Goa figures fourth among the first 10. Topmost is Maharashtra. Then West Bengal and Delhi.

After Goa are Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.

And other 14 states are Gujarat, Assam, Manipur, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chattisgarha, Kerala, Mizoram, Telengana, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.

And these are the figures of foreign countries, again compiled only on the basis of girls rescued, not actually involved in the sex trade. Topmost is Bangla Desh and then Nepal.

Other countries are Uzbekistan, Thailand, Kirgyzstan, Russia, Turkmenistan and Turkey.

Arun Padey is the inspiration behind ARZ. After getting Master’s degree in social work from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, he dedicated his life to ARZ.

This NGO has been awarded by union home ministry in 2011 and Stree Shakti Puraskar in 2015.

Recently he spoke at a book release function of ‘Beautiful Women’ translated in Marathi by Naman Sawant Dhavaskar on rehabilitated women.
