Paddy harvest feast was celebrated at Saint Michael’s church in Taleigao on Tuesday.

The feast is known as Konnsachem Fest and named after the sheaves of rice.

The feast indicates that the new paddy is ready for harvesting.

The tradition dates back to March 1510 when the Afonso de Albuquerque’s Portuguese were driven out of Panaji by Yusuf Adil Shah of Bijapur.

They got stranded at the estuary of Mandovi river and were on the verge of starvation when the people of Taleigao helped the Portuguese soldiers with grains and other eatables.

As a gesture of appreciation, Albuquerque granted the honor of harvesting the first paddy crop in the taluka to the people of Taleigao. Thus the tradition continues
