Tension in Bicholim over Chatrapati Shivaji statue status

Raut had criticized BBA and its leader Naresh Sawal over the removal of Shivaji statue in Bicholim.

Later, BBA had filed a police complaint against Raut and he along with five person were arrested.

The tension sparked off over a controversial letter by BBA to authorities over the Shivaji statue of Chatrapati Shivaji posing a traffic hurdle.

Meghshaym Raut and his supporters staged protest at statue.

This led the BBA to file complaint against Raut.

Acting on the complaint, Bicholim police arrested Raut and his supporters Manoj Naik, Bhupendra Malik, Nitin Parab, Sada Ghadi and Darshan Raut under the charges of threatening and unlawful assembly.

Former Bicholim MLA Naresh Sawal had written to PWD demanding to remove Shivaji statue arguing that it was causing traffic chaos.

This letter sparked tension. Meghshyam Raut and his supporters burnt the effigy of Sawal near the statue.
