Political tragedy has once again struck the Congress party in the state as 8 MLAs defected from the party and joined the BJP on Wednesday. The defectors included top congress leader including CLP and leader of opposition Micheal Lobo and former congress chief minister Digambar Kamat.

However, Michael terms it a merger as 2/3rd of the MLAs broke off just like last term. Here’s more on what unfolded in Goan politics today.

The chief opposition party consisting of 11 MLAs has been now reduced to just 3 in a major political rift in the congress party. This is the second time that the party has faced mass defection,

the first being back in 2019 when 10 of its MLAs defected to the BJP. However, what unfolded today has been in the political workshop for quite a while as rumors and gossip had gripped the state afterformer leader of opposition Michael Lobo met with the chief minister in a late-night visit.

Former leader of opposition, Micheal Lobo who had been under the limelight for rumors of the joining the BJP several months ago, addressed the media after meeting with the Chief minister at the assembly complex today.

Michael said that he along with 7 other MLAs joined the BJP for development and to strengthen the government. A reason heard previously during the 2019 defection. Michael further went on to add that while the congress has begun its Bharat Jodo yatra, Goa has begun the Congress chodo yatra or BJP ko jodo yatra.

However, the new political development has empowered the BJP with just 7 MLAs now in the opposition. The BJP, after completing the formalities at the assembly with Speaker Ramesh Twadkar giving assertion all the way from Delhi,

formally inducted the 8 MLAs at its office in Panjim. Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant during the induction ceremony said that Congress Chodo yatra has begun with Goa and that the BJP will secure over 400 seats in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
