Penniless tribal reaches IIT, Goans offer financial help

This is really an inspiring story of a poor but intelligent student and kind-hearted Goans who support him to become a top engineer.

A tribal student from Quepem has made it to IIT in Kanpur. And the whole Goan society has come forward to help him financially.

18-year old Savio Carvalho comes from a disturbed family. His mother is mentally ill and no father. His grandmother brought him up.

He finished his SSC at NavodayHighschool in Canacona and then was chosen through tough examination for his higher secondary studies in Navodayhighschool in Pune.

This institute trains students for IIT. Savio struggled, studied and passed even the advanced examination of IIT.

He has now chosen a branch of Mathematics and Computers at IIT in Kanpur.

Savio studied at Navodayhighschool in Canacona while his grandmother worked as a labourer in the fields and as a maid servant to support him.

And when he went to Pune, he passed his IIT exam with a meagre financial support of 5000 rupees for the whole year.

But studying at IIT is not an easy game. The ST students have to pay only 20 thousand rupees for their admission. And then minimum 30 thousand rupees per semester. 8 semesters in four years.

He was helpless. But some Goan youth took initiative, spread the message on social media and money started flowing to his account overnight. From industrialists to even some students who are also going for IIT studies. Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral also came forward.
