Dr Mesquita sets example for Goa, cremation after Church mass

Former minister and Goa’s leading gynaecologist Dr Wilfred Mesquita passed away in Mumbai hospital on Monday night.



As per his wish, he would be cremated on Tuesday at Hindu crematorium after holding a holy mass in the church. He was 70-years old.


As a young and enthusiastic doctor from Vasco, Dr Mesquita had entered active politics at the age of 25.


He was founder vice president of Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party. Rising up to different positions in the party, he was elected Vasco MLA in 1994 and also became a minister of revenue, sports and power in 1995 for a brief period.


Later in 2012, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. Besides holding positions like party vice president, he was also the NRI Commissioner with a cabinet rank in 2012.


 Dr Mesquita was also a popular gynaecologist, running his nursing home in Vasco. He was shifted to Hinduja hospital in Mumbai on 17th June.


Politicians across the party lines as well as his wellwishers gathered at his Chikhli resident when his cadaver arrived from Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon.


Tweeter and Facbook was full with obituaries paid to him, including Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant.


As per his last wish, Dr Mesquita will be cremated at Hindu crematorium on Wednesday at 11 in the morning, after having a holy mass at the St Andrews Church in Vasco at 10.30.
