Want mining to start soon? Form cooperatives of locals: Dependents

Everybody wants mining to restart as soon as possible. Then what is the best option? Auction, or a government corporation?

At such time, the mining dependents and affected locals have come forward with a proposal of forming cooperatives of the dependents.

And experts say that the Supreme Court has already given this option. An auction is not a must.

Goa365 had a Rannmalem debate on this issue last week where economic analyst Rajendra Kakodkar quoted the paragraphs of the Supreme Court order.

The court gives this option for social or welfare purpose. Goa Foundation had filed this petition.

Their director Dr. Claude Alvares also says that government corporation and cooperatives of dependents is the best option.

During our TV debate Rannmalem, this view was upheld by the truck drivers. President of truck drivers’ association Nilkanth Gawas asks why the mining dependents should not be allowed to prosper? Why only select families of the mining lease holders?

The real initiative in this regard was taken by the mining-affected and mining dependents of Caurem in Quepem taluka.

They formed a cooperative in 2014, but Goa government simply did not register it.

Finally, they had to approach the high court and get an order to register their cooperative. Last year in April.Tribal activist Ravindra Velip is one of the initiators of this.
