Jails across India remained overcrowded in as per 2019 National Crime Records Bureau. The latest data revealed by the National Crime Records Bureau says that prisoners are lodged in jails much more than the actual capacity of the prison.

The prisons themselves are under-staffed. These records come amidst the Colvale issues that were recently highlighted in the media.

Here are the details listed by NCRB data

Out of the 4.78 lakh prisoners, 4.58 lakh were men and 19,913 women

Central jails had highest capacity of 1.77 inmates

The data also highlights lethargy in Colvale Central Jail.

Colvale jail was all in bad name due to various reasons. Allegations were made that there is no food provided to inmates.

A video also went viral in which one inmate was seen making a music video of himself.

And even an undertrial had escaped out of prison.

Newly appointed IG prision had admitted that jail guards do not do their work properly and there is a need to train them.
