Cabinet gives green signal to new Education Policy after 34 years

The Union cabinet replaced the antiquated National Policy on Education that was framed in 1986 with a new Education Policy 2020 on Wednesday.



The national policy makes far reaching reforms in school and higher education including in the way subjects are taught. The new policy will have 12 years of schooling with three years of Anganwadi/ pre-schooling.

 The last education police was made some 34 years back. From then to now rthere have been far reaching and radical changes in society, jobs and technology. But the policy has remained the same, not keeping up with the times.

The policy will replace the 10+2 structure of school curriculum by a 5+3+3+4 curricular structure corresponding to ages 3-8, 8-11, 11-14, and 14-18 years respectively.

            Schooling to start at 3 yrs

    mandatory schooling from 3-18 yrs

    Replaces 10+2 structure by 5+3+3+4 structure

    Corresponding ages 3-8, 8-11, 11-14, 14-18 yrs

    No language to be imposed on anyone.

    Students can select subjects across the streams.

    Vocational education from 6th grade, include internships.
