OBC RESERVATIONS

The State Election Commission has issued a fresh notification for reservation with OBC quota for elections to the 186 panchayats in the state. The SEC in the notification said the wards are reserved as per the recommendations given by the Goa State Commission for OBC. A total of 307 wards have been reserved for the OBC.

SEC on 1^st July had issued the notification for reservations without OBC quota. However, it led to unrest among a section of society who ultimately went to High Court. However, their plea was dismissed.

Later, the Chief Minister said the OBC commission will send its recommendation to the SEC who will decide on the reservation. Later, the Directorate of Panchayats included 19 additional castes in the OBC category.

Yesterday the SEC issued a reservation for OBCs based on the recommendations of the OBC commission. The fresh reservations are issued to 1528 wards of the 185 panchayats. 307 reserved for OBC, 22 for SC and 187 for ST. Based on recommendation the SEC has reserved around 3 to 4 wards in 11 to 9 ward members’ panchayats.
