The Courts has delivered a double blow to the government on the Panchayat elections. The High Court has dismissed the plea for OBC reservation while the the Supreme Court has also refused to entertain the government’s plea to postpone the panchayat elections. The election would now be held on 10 August and counting on August 12th under the present notification.



After the High Court dismissed plea of Goa government to postpone the Panchayat elections. Goa government had moved the apex court on 4 July challenging the HC order and requesting that polls be held in September. However, Supreme Court refused to interfere in the High Court’s order that directed that Panchayat elections be conducted within 45 days.

Soon after the High Court dismissed the petition to postpone the election, the SEC issued notification to hold election on 10 August and simultaneously issued notification for reservations without OBC. However, some section objected to women reservation and no reservation for OBC. The matter went to the High Court but Court which on Wednesday dismissed this petition to de-notify reservations.
